Get To Know Me: Daniela

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE?

I use mostly watercolor and photography, I like to combine them together. I sometimes use collage, but I like to think I don't have a style because I like to try new things. I try to make art about my past experiences and how that has shaped me today.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE?

It's mostly feelings and sometimes music. I can listen to a song and think 'Wow! what if I can make the visual equivalent to that' like the artistic equivalent to this song. With my feelings, if I'm feeling very joyous on a day I would try to make an artwork based on what made me feel that joy. Usually things that made me feel joy I would put into art, for example vibrant colors. If I'm feeling sad, I would try to make a painting that could translate that

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS? DOES IT START WITH A SKETCH, A PHOTO, OR AN IDEA?

I just start! I usually don't sketch, I don't plan before hand. If I'm using watercolor, for example, I just grab the blank canvas and just start doing my art. It turns out how it will turn out

WHAT DOES TEEN LAB MEAN TO YOU?

It was certainly a new experience, it's a place for me to learn and grow so it means a lot to me. It's mostly about trying new things and new concepts, like the Journey theme was new and never thought of that. And trying the triptych was something I had never done before and was interesting to try. I love how artistic and diverse Chicago is, theres always going to be something for you here no matter what you do. For example, as an artist you have teen lab or if you're a musician you have a lot of programs. In Miami [where Daniela is from] you don't see this kind of thing. I just love how this city is very that open mindedness about anything you can do.
