Teen Lab at the Art Institute of Chicago
In Spring 2017, Teen Lab focused on the theme of Justice. Our inquiry centered around questions like the following:
- How do artists reckon with the idea of doing the right thing?
- Should the artist be concerned with justice? If so, how?
- What value does self-expression, self-love have in our world’s politics?
- What role do representations (that artists make) play in our society?
- How can self-care, health, well-being contribute to our creative processes in a contentious society?
To address these topics, Teen Labbers led discussions, produced reflective work, and collaborated with visiting artists.
- Lauren Ash of BlackGirlInOm and Party Noire led a guided meditation and shared her best practices for starting your own arts-based organization.
- Rae Chardonnay of Black Eutopia and Party Noire gave a DJ demonstration and took questions on curating space.
- Diana Quinones Rivera shared her work in film and discussed its relationship to dance and music.
- Moki Tantoco led a workshop on printmaking with available materials.
- A Long Walk Home collaborated with Teen Lab for a mutual workshop in self care rituals.
