PUBLIC ART

This semester, our Teen Lab members consider topics related to the art we encounter everyday, Public Art. Through creative making and group discussion, teens will study the fantastic sculptures and murals that illuminate the city of Chicago.

Lead artist José Olivarez molds this concept through a few reflection questions.

  • How do we share art? How can we make art that interrupts daily patterns?

  • How can we create art that is accessible to everyone?

  • How are Artists using digital platforms to create powerful works of art? How does

José then provokes a new set of questions that consider public art as spectacle and a form of community engagement.

  • How are artists using murals to bridge community differences?

  • How do we take neighborhood history and turn it into an art piece that audiences will have
    to reckon with?

Throughout the semester José has organized art projects, guided tours of the Art Institute, visiting artist lectures, and workshops to explore the ways young artists and practitioners arts can spread their messages to our Chicago community.
