Teen Lab at the Art Institute of Chicago

In March, graffiti artist and educator Miguel Aguilar, also known as Kane-1, conducted a tour of mural art in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood. Miguel started the tour with a brief introduction to the symbols and icons most commonly seen in the neighborhood and their relationship to the sights and smells of Latinx culture. Each mural on the tour prompted a discussion about public art and it's significance to communities of color. 

 

 Miguel also spoke about his experience as a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Miguel brought Teen Lab back to his studio and talked about his work as a young artist. Teen Lab members were also allowed to test their graffiti skills with water-based spray paints courtesy of Miguel. On Miguel's wall, the teens represented Chicago slang and experimented with different spray techniques.
