Teen Lab at the Art Institute of Chicago
WEAVING WORKSHOP
During an afternoon in October we sat with practicing and teaching artist Peregrine Bermas to learn about weaving baskets from gently used materials. Teen apprentices coiled yarn or pieces of fabric around a piece of clothesline, and built up the coils into small baskets.
We found the repetitive motion of coiling meditative and calming, and talked about the tradition of weaving as an art and historical gathering space among Brown and Black women.
