Teen Lab at the Art Institute of Chicago
Get To Know Me: Xochitl
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE?
I draw mostly people and body parts, [my work is] realistic but color wise I don't like to paint a skin tone, I like to use a color that I associate with the emotions of the people I paint. Last year I focused on trying to express confusion, I was in a weird haze last year so I wasn't sure how to express how I felt to my friends so I gave up on saying it through words and wanted to learn what that confusion was through art.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE?
Myself because I'm amazing, but besides that anything I see inspires me. Especially when I come downtown three days a week it still amazes me everyday, it does not get old. Seeing other ideas also inspires me.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS? DOES IT START WITH A SKETCH, A PHOTO, OR AN IDEA?
Some start with photos but I usually get ideas mid way through creating my work actually. It's the reason why I re-design and start over in my work so much because I like the art that I make to have meaning so a lot of it doesn't have meaning when I start but the idea will soon spark.
WHAT DOES TEEN LAB MEAN TO YOU?
It's this outlet to be who i've been wanting to be for a while. I think it's great that I get to meet other artists and people that understand my love for art because not a lot of people in my life understand that.
