Teen Lab at the Art Institute of Chicago
Get To Know Me: Andrea
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE?
It’s very open, I usually draw from what I get in my mind. What’s around me and surrounds me, usually I make my art based on events that have happened to me. My work is very personal and very me in a way. I also take other artists work and sort of blend it into my own work and create something that is meaningful for me. For example, someone could draw a rose and I will add to that rose to make it my style.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE?
I am inspired by the thought of being able to express myself even when I don’t have words to describe what I’m feeling. My dad also inspires me, he is very creative. He is a pastry chef so he makes cakes and that’s very artistic. He used to draw but now he’s busy with his cakes. He inspires me to try something new and be open
HOW DO YOU APPROACH EACH NEW PIECE?
First I look at what makes it unique, what makes it interesting, and then I look at the smaller details. I always try to focus on the small details because those details are usually the ones that are overlooked, it’s usually the big picture that is more noticed. I believe that artists hide little clues in the artwork, I think you have focus on those details than the big image.
WHAT DOES TEEN LAB MEAN TO YOU? .
It’s just a fun way to express ourselves and collaborate as a group with other teens. We get to see other teens work and each of us have a different art style.
