Teen Lab at the Art Institute of Chicago
Get To Know Me: Jemily
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE?
A mix between realistic and graffiti elements, mainly working in black and white. When doing graffiti I will use words and that will be the only color on the piece. Graffiti is in my culture and what I grew up around. My friends and teachers are into graffiti and it’s all over my neighborhood. I like the realistic portraits of people [on murals] because with the slightest change of shading you can say a lot with just their expression.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE?
My life motivates me to be creative. I know a lot of people have a hard time expressing how they feel and I know how that feels, when you haven’t found that space where you can let everything out. [When] seeing how other’s are doing now, I want to change that through art.
HOW DO YOU APPROACH EACH NEW PIECE?
I get inspired by lyrics a lot, not just to use it in poems but to create a whole picture. I like to bounce back and forth between old pieces and new pieces.
WHAT DOES TEEN LAB MEAN TO YOU? .
Being open minded. Here, I really learned to see other people. I didn’t think I had a lot in common with most people but being here, you never really know what others have to say. So seeing other people’s art and process is cool.
