Teen Lab at the Art Institute of Chicago
Get To Know Me: Yocelyn
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE?
For the most part, I like working with my hands but I am not much of a drawer or painter I am more of a sculptor. I have this clear image in my head of what I want to do but it’s not until I get physical materials into my hands that I can really process this and turn what I’m envisioning in my head into actual artwork.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE?
I like to look at reference photos! A lot of my work is inspired by multiple artists at once, so I will go online and search a bunch of pieces related to how I’m feeling. It’s really drawn form a collaboration of artists to capture how I’m feeling.
HOW DO YOU APPROACH EACH NEW PIECE?
Most of my pieces are inspired by provoked thought. When I am feeling really overwhelmed, it is a way for me to let my emotions out. I don’t really approach a piece any certain way, I just start.
WHAT DOES TEEN LAB MEAN TO YOU? .
Teen Lab has been really great. Coming to the Art Institute and having a place to make art and talk about topics that you don’t have the outlet to talk about in school or outside of school has been great. It’s a safe place, a place where you can express yourself. You have access to so many materials, you aren’t restricted in any way. Teen Lab is freedom.
