Teen Lab at the Art Institute of Chicago
Get To Know Me: Katie
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE?
I think my work is very personal. I try to add a lot of myself and my emotions into the work. It's not really about politics but I'm interested in my own personal world. I know that a lot of people are making political work but I just roam like it's nothing and take things for granted.
HOW HAS OUR SEMESTER THEME IMPACTED YOUR ARTISTIC PRACTICE?
Well, I grew up in Pilsen and growing up there were different ways to to display your art that really influenced me. My art teacher motivated me to get my work out there and I would always see art around my neighborhood. We also had a field trip to Louder Than A Bomb, and I really enjoyed that trip because I feel at times the only thing I know how to do is make art so it was nice to see other people express their feelings with writing and spoken word.
WHAT THEMES OR SYMBOLS REAPPEAR IN YOUR BODY OF WORK?
Flowers, I draw a bunch of flowers because I love them. Even though I am allergic to them, I am always drawing flowers. I also draw people a very specific way, using a lot of line work. I haven't changed that style very much.
WHAT DOES TEEN LAB MEAN TO YOU?
I like Teen Lab more than my art room environment, because I feel that you guys teach us but you give us our own ways to create. Typically people are saying, 'make a drawing of yourself' but here we can make a drawing or a sculpture or anything else.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER TEEN LAB?
I am a junior, so I have been trying to sign up for as many art related things as I can right now because I realized that when I become an adult there will be more expensive art classes. I am trying to do as much as I can now because this year I didn't know how expensive the supplies were, so I have to save up. So I want to pursue art, but I also want to be a lawyer.
