Get To Know Me: Edwin

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE?

Unique and crazy. When I show people my designs and the things that I do, they tell me that they wouldn't have thought to make this. So something just pops into my head and I draw it. If I see a dog in the street, and I like it's color, I will say 'You know what? I'm going to draw that dog and replace it's feet with chicken legs'. I will basically modify things.

HOW HAS OUR SEMESTER THEME IMPACTED YOUR ARTISTIC PRACTICE?

People often tell me that my art connects to them. I was making a drawing about standing up to my problems and the things that I am going to, and people would tell me that they connected with the work and could relate to this idea of struggle-- I got that response from a decent amount of people. And with public art, people feel that Teens are not understandable so I make art around that too.

WHAT THEMES OR SYMBOLS REAPPEAR IN YOUR BODY OF WORK?

Sometimes I draw creatures that represent my life. I will replace his head with an alien's head and people question this, but I can only say 'that represent my Uncle'. I often draw creatures interacting with each other, once I drew a cousin that passed away as an alien but sitting with a pipe in his mouth in the car that he was found in when he was kidnapped and killed. The rest of the car was full of his family members that were also kidnapped with him and didnt make it but he was alive in my head so I focused on him.

WHAT DOES TEEN LAB MEAN TO YOU?

Teen Lab has turned me into a different person in a way, that it helped my communication skills and interact with others in ways that I had never done before. When I first joined, I didn't expect to get along with anyone but it made me realize that not everyone is going to be the same. I realized that you have to meet people and get to know them before judging them. I honestly love Teen Lab and wish I could come back again and again.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER TEEN LAB?

I might try out for Pratt Institute in Brooklyn New York and if not I will try to be a student at SAIC.
