Teen Lab at the Art Institute of Chicago
Get To Know Me: R'riyon
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE?
I would describe my work as empowering, uplifting, joyful, and lighthearted. I dont want to be serious all the time but I always make it a mission to give your art a purpose and a meaning to others. They should be able to relate to it, and mine is centered around uplifting young women in a world full of negativity because not enough people uplift women. So I feel like its my job to do this.
HOW HAS OUR SEMESTER THEME IMPACTED YOUR ARTISTIC PRACTICE?
I really liked meeting Kane-1 because I liked his graffiti style and the fact that he was doing things even when the law is not on his side-- that was so cool. And him going out and spreading his messages out there even though there are so many restrictions on that, but not caring was so powerful to me. Also when we went to the Cultural Center and I got to see the mural outside that was related to my project for Final Showcase, I thought it was really cool how these inspirational Chicago women were being carved into trees.
WHAT THEMES OR SYMBOLS REAPPEAR IN YOUR BODY OF WORK?
Again, I think it's all about the women because they are so strong an powerful. Women drive our society so I use that message and theme with my acrylic and watercolor style. My style is very animated, illustrative, and I stick to those two mediums. I try new stuff but those are the ones that stick because it makes the illustrations pop more than sculpture or other styles. Animation and digital styles also work really well for that.
WHAT DOES TEEN LAB MEAN TO YOU?
Teen Lab is a big family that I know will stick with me wherever I go. All the lessons and funny memories we have learned in Teen Lab I will always remember it, it's not something you can just throw away. A lot of the techniques and things that I've learned in teen lab were developed in a space like this, and allowed me to help others so that's great.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER TEEN LAB?
There are a lot of career paths that I'm thinking about right now. I'm only a freshman and very indecisive and trying to figure it all out. That's why I apply for so many pre-college programs. I love doing a lot of things, I am in sports, BSU (Black Student Union), other organizations. I'm interested in history, forensic science, science engineering. There are so many things that I enjoy doing that I cant just pick one thing right now. Bur doing Teen Lab and other programs like this has allowed me to explore those options.
