Teen Lab at the Art Institute of Chicago
Nydia Monroy
What's your artist statement?
I make art to voice my thoughts and opinions, to express myself. I think it's been a form of learning about myself as I explore different types of art and create my own. I've enjoyed printmaking, mixed media, and fashion. I think I find myself a little more every time I make a new piece so I'd say identity is often a theme in my work. I tend to make art with the intent of getting others to react or learn something from my work.
What does "art" mean to you?
Art means limitless power. It is something that allows me to push boundaries and learning. It's a part of history, it's well and alive today, and it's through places like Teen Lab that it continues to grow.
Has Teen Lab helped you grow as an artist?
Teen Lab has definitely helped me grow as both an artist and a person. Having access to art through the museum and amazing teachers and friends at Teen Lab have all contributed to my growth. I've been able to gain exposure to different artists and their work which has only expanded my own views on art. Overall, I think the safe and creative space Teen Lab has provided has helped me develop as an artist.
