Teen Lab at the Art Institute of Chicago
Jessica
My work is mostly centered around ideas of my own culture. On good days, I feel very connected to the island that holds my roots. Other days, it’s hard to find and really feel that connection. These more difficult times are the days that I tend to be most inspired. Creating art that stems from my passion and appreciation of my home and culture helps me better understand many different aspects in my own life. Most of my previous work is in the form of short stories and poems addressing holding onto my culture and the gentrification that seems to attack Chicago. Through exploring different mediums of expression, I have been able to find the way that best makes others think about the power that different cultures can bring to communities.
