Teen Lab at the Art Institute of Chicago
Get To Know Me: Janisse
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE?
I like to make it kind of modern, influenced by the people around me. Growing up around the 2000's, I think that has a lot to do with what's in my art and growing up around a lot of social media. Social media is really big right now so I think it influences what I want to draw on a certain day. I think my art is kind of spontaneous, whatever I'm feeling that day is what I want to make.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE?
I think it has a lot to do with my family, I have two older sisters and they're both artists so that made me want to be an artist as well but we all have very different styles.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS? DOES IT START WITH A SKETCH, A PHOTO, OR AN IDEA?
It depends on how I feel a certain day, like if I feel very happy one day then I'll make something bright and popping. If I'm feeling very sad, it wont be depressing but I feel that it's an opportunity to show a lot of my inner emotions. I don't talk to a lot of people so my art is my inner emotions and how I feel on the inside.
WHAT DOES TEEN LAB MEAN TO YOU?
Teen Lab is a very amazing opportunity for me. I came from a Catholic school before I went to High School and I didn't have a lot of friends growing up. I was very shy and didn't have a lot of common interests with the people around me, they really liked sports but I liked to draw but right now I feel like I've found the people I can relate to. It's a really good feeling!
