Get To Know Me: Justyn

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE?

My style is mostly animated but sometimes I like to dabble into realistic. If I don't like how it turns out then I will usually just go back to my animated styles because as long as it captures some of the key traits of the character it can be whatever it is. I like working with superheroes, specifically female superheroes because I feel they're more interesting to draw than the males because of the design and their power. Most of these female characters can actually beat the males in hand to hand combat, so I constantly draw them. I like strong female figures, I drew my mother once. I draw from movies that have strong female roles as well, I really like the movie Black Swan because of how she had to loose herself to become the leader in the movie. So I stick to female drawings.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE?

If I watch a movie and love the outfit or the overall message I'll attempt to draw it. If I feel that they could have done a better job I'll remove some of their stuff and add my own touch to it. So if the color scheme is kind of off and I don't like it, I'll add my own color.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS? DOES IT START WITH A SKETCH, A PHOTO, OR AN IDEA?

I usually start with a photo then move on to sketching it and look at other peoples drawings for inspiration. Then I go back and add my own color to it. I attempt and fail multiple times trying to find the right color to certain things but I try to do it in one sitting because since colors are right there I wont have to remix it again.

WHAT DOES TEEN LAB MEAN TO YOU?

It's a second family and a second art class because right now Im only taking one art class in my school and you can only spend 50 minutes each day so on days we have Teen Lab Im excited to work on more artwork. It's something I've always loved and a passion of mine since I was in kindergarten, I've always loved drawing and so I love coming here and drawing what I feel. Plus I get feed back from my peers and the advisors, it's always nice to hear criticism whether it's good or bad. It just means I have to improve or add more to my work.
