Teen Lab at the Art Institute of Chicago
Get To Know Me: R'riyon
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE?
My style isn't completely developed right now, but I'm into cartoons and drawing eyes a lot. It's something that I like to do and I feel like you can change so many qualities by drawing the same thing over and over again, so that's pretty cool. I like color, I'm not a fan of drawing in black and white. I normally draw African American women, I'm an African American woman and I stick to what I know. I feel like [African Americans] are not really represented as much in the art medias so I try to represent my culture this way.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE?
My family really inspires me. The things that they do and sacrifice for me, I feel like I can give back to them through my art.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS? DOES IT START WITH A SKETCH, A PHOTO, OR AN IDEA?
I usually start by thinking about it in a different way, looking at it from different sides or an angle because there's always something you can twist or manipulate so I try to go for that out of the box thinking. I start a rough sketch in my sketchbook and then try to build off of that before I go into the final product because it takes me a while to get to the final product. I usually take it slow because slow and steady wins the race.
WHAT DOES TEEN LAB MEAN TO YOU?
Teen Lab is like a family, each one of these people and individuals that I've met over these few weeks have added to my identity. If I hadn't met them I don't know where my art style would be because they inspire me too, they're my inspiration as well. Their art style adds onto my art style-- I steal techniques and copy from them too but I've learned a lot from them and the mentors.
