Site Specific Projects

This week we thought about how our art can enhance the spaces around us and the spaces that we come from. We considered what it means to be a site-specific artist and how art can be used to amplify a space. After looking at site-specific works made by other artists, we broke up into groups and designed projects of our own.

Our site-specific interventions were designed for Millennium Park and intended to engage the audiences that we found there. What do we want to say about our communities and how can we start a dialogue or ask the audience for their respectful participation?

Princess, Jasmine, Celeste and Staci created a large poster that asked the public to respond to two prompts: "One thing Chicago needs" and "I wish Chicago could..."

Quintin, Helen and Justyn made a space for people to voice their opinions of the city. They lined a board with post-it notes and prompted participants to write down their opinions to: "What Chicago is" vs. "What Chicago is Not."

Lucia, Ameerah and Malaika asked the audience to share their Chicago favorites. They created prompts that asked the public to write down their favorite food, favorite chill spot and favorite restaurant.

Bella, Miesha, Nydia and Cynthia created a project that asked people to think about "their Chicago." On a large poster, they gave directions to: 1. Choose a card, 2. Read the card, 3. Now think of Chicago, 4. Draw what the card says in terms of Chicago. They provided sidewalk chalk and boldly placed themselves at one of the entrances to Millennium park on Michigan avenue.

And here's the group!
