Visions and Thoughts

As a program that encourages creative expression, critical discussion, and self-discovery, Teen Lab appeals to young emerging artists from all over Chicago. Whether you're a skilled painter, or have never touched a paint brush before, the artistry of Teen Lab is rooted in the coming together of young creative minds-- the formation of a community of youth. When a new member joins TL, they're history, ideas, opinions, and creativity add a new layer to the group. While our network is continually growing, one thing remains absolute: TL is and will always be a safe space in which respect for others, compassion, and non-judgement are held above all else.

"Teen Lab is a great family environment. You make friends and we all have the freedom to express our creativity."

- Sarai Gilliam

Sarai (quoted above) is the Teen Lab intern this semester and is a three year TL alumni!

While some of the teens have participated in TL in prior semesters, we also have some amazing first-time teens joining our community. When asked what he's hoping will come out of his first semester in TL, Dimitri said, "I’ve always liked art and I’m looking for a way to expand my art skills." Emani, a sophomore in high school and another first-time participant, also shared her hopes for the program: "I think TL should be a learning environment. I hope we have discussions where everyone can share and not be judged: A place of understanding."

Here's what some of our other returning teens had to say about the program:

Malaika: "I like that Teen Lab is a space for creative expression. We have more mobility than other teen programs in that we get to go on field trips. I want our final showcases to be huge- a huge party for people to come look at our art."

Jasmine: "We get to come here and be more focused on ourselves as artists."

Meisha: "I like to come to Teen Lab after all of my AP classes at school and not worry too much. The discussions will be deep and meaningful, and I know I will be heard without trying so hard. Being around people with the same interests and having so much creative freedom are things that I look forward to coming to TL. I think we are all here to discover and dig deeper into art, who we are, how we relate to art, and what we can do to improve our art."

Celeste: "At TL, we’re about growing as people through our art. That includes many different forms of art, like painting, movement, spoken word, etc. We grow as people when we encounter things from our day to day,and when we learn how to express ourselves. Through art, we can learn where we are in society and/or make a space for ourselves in society."

...and here's what a couple of our first time participants are looking forward to:

Dimitri: I’ve always liked art and I’m looking for a way to expand my art skills.

Emani: I think TL should be a learning environment. I hope we have discussions where everyone can share and not be judged: A place of understanding.
